Travel Europe by Train
Rail travel in Europe is a convenient and relatively cheap and convenient form of transport around the countries of europe. It is a strong competitor to air traveland there are good reasons why.
- If you like space when you travel? Then you can have it on a train. There is mor
e space for luggage and more space for you for. It is also alot cheaper than air travel to move things like ski’s, snow boards, surf boards. - Speaking of cost, for a relatively cheap price you can get a rail europe ticket or eurorail pass and get alot more bang for your buck. The travel dollar definitely stretches alot further when using this mode of transport. A recommendation is the Eurail Global Pass. You can get up to a 3 month pass, which is very handy if you plan on staying in Europe for an extended period of time, this pass is also the best value.
- Railways in Europe are modern clean and far cry from some of their Asian and African counterparts. Having said that you still need to be wary of strangers and keep your luggage close at all times.
- You get to see the wonderful scenery of Europe as you travel over the country side. Europe has it all lush green fields, snow capped mountains, golden beaches, scenic river valleys and much more.
- When you reach your destination you are more refreshed than travelling by Flying. You would have to fly everywhere first class to get the same level of comfort as you do on a train, even in standrad class.

Travel Europe by Car
Travelling Europe by car can be a little more hectic than train travel but it does offer versatility, that neither Rail nor Flightscan.
- A car trip can take in all the scenery a train trip can and some. If scenery is what you are after then renting a car and heaidng out is the way to go. Following
atourist map can really only be done by a few modes of transport. The easiest and most convenient of these is a rental car. - In the current climate, car rental companies are giving out huge discounts. They are fighting tooth and nail for your business, so definitely shop around.
- Like train travel, car rental offers you the oportunity to take alot more luggage than by flight. Depending on which car you rent, you may even be able to take more than you can on a train. If you are on a skiing holiday? then a car will not only take all your luggage but with a good set of snow chains, will get you to the door of the challet. That kind of convenience can really only be offered to the traveller by renting a car. All this in air conditioned condiotioned comfort.
- You do have to be careful when driving around Europe though. The continental driver is usually more agressive than the American driver. The horn is used judiciously and does not usually mean that the other driver is upset at you. It is usually meant as a warning that they are near by. Round abouts are more common and so are trafic lightless junctions. So use your common sense, when driving and you should be ok.
- When hiring a car, make sure you give the car a good looking over. Take note of any damage and if possible bring it to the attention of the person hiring the car to you. It can be a common practice in some European countries for some of the smaller car rental firms to try and charge you for damage that was already on the car. To avoid this stick with some of the bigger hire companies like Budget, EuropeCar or Avis.
Travel Europe Safely
Safety has to be a high priority when travelling. Have fun! Just have it safely!
- When travelling around Europe, make sure you have your Passport and all your Visas in order. Always check that your passport is not going to expire while you
are away, as getting a new one can be quite difficult. It will usually require a trip to your consulate. Visas are issued by the relevant authorities of the countries you are visiting, typically this will be the countries consulate. - Travel responsibly – Respect the customs and culture of the country you are visiting. Definitely respect the local laws and religious observances. Do not travel with illicit drugs on your person or in your bags. Make sure you check all your bags before heading to an airport or to a border crossing. Always pack your own bags, trust no one to do this for you. Never carry other peoples luggage through border crossings or through airports. If you are carrying presciption drugs, make sure you are carrying the prescription or any relevant documentation.
- Travel Insurance is essential. Do not go on holiday without travel insurance. Make sure you research the different policies and companies that offer them. Medical Cover is probably the most important aspect of travel insurance. Check that your policy will cover you up to $2million dollars worth of medical expenses. Remember you may break a leg and have to flown by helicopter from the ski slopes to the nearest hospital. Things do happen so make sure you are prepared for any medical emergency. Other types of cover you can get are Possesion Cover, Personal Liability Cover, Cancellation Cover and Personal Accident Cover. Try not to skimp on any of these parts of a policy. The only thing worse than a holiday spoiled by an unforeseen occurrence, is the same holiday with no travel insurance.
- Keep safe when travelling and have great memories for the rest of your life.
Travel Europe by Air
There has never been a cheaper time to travel by air. In the current climate the travel dollar can fly you further.
- Cheap Tickets are being offered by nearly every airline in the world. Just check online before you phone a travel agent. The airline industry has always been a cut
throat industry, however the current economic climate has magnified that effect. A new budget airline seems to pop up every week. Although good for the hip pocket, you sometimes do have to wonder about how all this price competition is affecting safety. - When travelling by airplane, there are generaly three classes of seat. First Class – most of us will not experience this as the price can be exorbitant, However for a long haul flight, say from New York to Paris, it would be a dream. Most first class passengers get a seat that turns into a flat lie down bed and usually has no one seated with in a meter of them. Business Class – while not as good as first class, business class is still miles ahead of economy class. With most airlines the seats turn into almost flat beds. However the room bewteen passengers is still quite cozy. Economy CLass – also sometimes referred to derogatorily as “cattle class” has by far the least room of all the classes. The chairs rarely go flat, most don’t even recline to far and the space between you and the next passenger is overly cozy! However this is all compensated by how cheap the seats are. Flying from one continent to the other is usually cheaper in economy class than flying from one country to another in business class. So although it is not the most comfortable way to travel it definitely has value for money going for it.
- The main advantage of airline travel is the speed. Nothing compares, some bullet tains come close but do not quite match the speed of a airplane. So for those travellers out there that must get to a destination a quickly as possible, air travel is for you. You will only see the scenery from above, which can be spectacular in it’s own way. However it can’t match either rail travel or car travel for spectcular scenery. So get yourself on one of the many cheap flights on offer at the moment.
